One of the most common questions we receive from builders and scaffolding contractors is: “How much scaffolding do I actually need?” Getting the quantity right is critical — order too little and your project stalls waiting for additional components; order too much and you’re tying up capital in excess inventory.
This guide provides a practical, step-by-step method for estimating scaffolding quantities for standard Kwikstage and Ringlock systems.
Start with the basics: measure the total length and height of scaffolding required.
Total scaffold length = the perimeter or linear run that needs scaffolding access (in metres).
Total scaffold height = the height from ground level to the highest working platform required (in metres).
For example, a building facade that is 24 metres long and needs scaffold access to 6 metres high.
| Measurement | Calculation | Example (24m x 6m) |
|---|---|---|
| Number of bays | Total length ÷ bay length (typically 2.4m) | 24 ÷ 2.4 = 10 bays |
| Number of lifts | Total height ÷ lift height (typically 2.0m) | 6 ÷ 2.0 = 3 lifts |
| Number of standard positions | Number of bays + 1 | 10 + 1 = 11 positions |
For a standard single-row Kwikstage scaffold with 2.4m bays and 2.0m lifts, each bay requires approximately:
| Component | Per Bay Per Lift | Total (10 bays x 3 lifts) |
|---|---|---|
| Standards (verticals) | 2 per bay (shared with adjacent bay) | 11 x 3 = 33 standards |
| Ledgers (horizontals) | 2 per bay (top and bottom of each lift) | 10 x 4 = 40 ledgers |
| Transoms (cross members) | 2 per bay per platform level | 10 x 2 x 3 = 60 transoms |
| Planks (decking) | 3–4 per bay (for 0.7m or 1.2m width) | 10 x 3 = 30 planks (top deck) |
| Diagonal braces | 1 per bay per lift | 10 x 3 = 30 braces |
| Base jacks | 1 per standard position | 11 base jacks |
| Sole boards | 1 per standard position | 11 sole boards |
Don’t forget the components required for compliance:
Guardrails and mid-rails — required on all open sides at every platform level. Budget 2 guardrails per bay at each working level.
Toeboards — required at every platform edge to prevent tools and materials falling.
Access ladders — at least one ladder access point per scaffold run, with edge protection at each landing.
Ties/anchors — per manufacturer specifications, typically every 4m vertically and every 6m horizontally.
Pro Tip: Always add a 10–15% contingency to your calculated quantities. This covers component damage during transport, site modifications, and unforeseen scaffold extensions. For complex or multi-phase projects, increase the contingency to 20%.
For a rough initial estimate when preparing a budget or enquiry, use this simplified formula:
Total scaffold tonnage ≈ Scaffold area (m²) × 0.05 tonnes/m²
Example: 24m long × 6m high = 144m² × 0.05 = approx. 7.2 tonnes
This gives you a ballpark figure for initial quoting. For an accurate order, work through the component-level calculation above or send us your project dimensions and we’ll prepare a detailed material list.
If you’d prefer not to calculate quantities yourself, simply send us your project dimensions (length, height, number of levels, single or double row) and our technical team will prepare a complete material list with pricing within 24 hours.
