One of the most common questions we receive from builders and scaffolding contractors is: “How much scaffolding do I actually need?” Getting the quantity right is critical — order too little and your project stalls waiting for additional components; order too much and you’re tying up capital in excess inventory.
This guide provides a practical, step-by-step method for estimating scaffolding quantities for standard Kwikstage and Ringlock systems.
Step 1: Measure the Scaffold Footprint
Start with the basics: measure the total length and height of scaffolding required.
Total scaffold length = the perimeter or linear run that needs scaffolding access (in metres).
Total scaffold height = the height from ground level to the highest working platform required (in metres).
For example, a building facade that is 24 metres long and needs scaffold access to 6 metres high.
Step 2: Calculate the Number of Bays and Lifts

Step 4: Add Safety and Access Components
Don’t forget the components required for compliance:
Guardrails and mid-rails — required on all open sides at every platform level. Budget 2 guardrails per bay at each working level.
Toeboards — required at every platform edge to prevent tools and materials falling.
Access ladders — at least one ladder access point per scaffold run, with edge protection at each landing.
Ties/anchors — per manufacturer specifications, typically every 4m vertically and every 6m horizontally.
Step 5: Add a Contingency
Pro Tip: Always add a 10–15% contingency to your calculated quantities. This covers component damage during transport, site modifications, and unforeseen scaffold extensions. For complex or multi-phase projects, increase the contingency to 20%.

Total scaffold tonnage ≈ Scaffold area (m²) × 0.05 tonnes/m²
Example: 24m long × 6m high = 144m² × 0.05 = approx. 7.2 tonnes
